- Car Dealer Horror Story -
More Car Sales People Respond!
Part 2 of 3

:: Car dealer horror story by Frank a car sales person from California, United States writes...
"In response to the person that said he was given a good price and walks away thinking that he can get a good deal somewhere else: It is not the dealers or salespersons fault that customers do not trust the bottom line price quoted to you. I believe that this type of customers have not done research and too ignorant to know what a good deal is. They waste time going around town hoping another dealer can beat the price. What for? A couple hundred bucks? I have no respect for people that do not understand that we too have to make some commision. How would you feel if you sold a $25,000 car and made $50 on the deal?"

MY RESPONSE...
Nice try Frank but you are completely missing the point of the car dealer horror story series and this entire site. I'm not disputing the fact that you need to make a profit. In fact Frank, I don't care if you make a million dollars profit on each car you sell.....as long as you are totally open, upfront and honest with your car buyers and don't work them to death. See, my opinion is that it is the buyers duty to research a new car and make a decision as to what kind of car they want and then get multiple new car price quotes so they will know first hand that they are getting the best deal. Its what makes the world go around Frank and I'm sure you do the same thing before you make a major purchase. Then if after they have done their due diligence and they choose to buy a car from you, even if it costs a million dollars more than any other dealer (or $500.00, or whatever) then that is their choice to do that and they have NOTHING to complain about....as long as they weren't lied to, cheated and worked by you in the process. Get it?

:: Car dealer horror story from a car salesperson named Rich...
"I must admit I find some of your "information" as humorous as it is outdated and worthless. As a veteran of 16 years in the car business, most of which were spent in sales management, I can tell you without reservation that there are plenty of honest and reputable car dealers and salespeople in this world.

You seem to be laboring under the misconception that auto dealers are not permitted to make a profit. I wonder how long you would survive if your employer did not earn a profit on their investment.

Certainly there are things to avoid and negotiation techniques that informed buyers should be aware of when buying or leasing from a dealer. However, your obvious attempt to portray anyone associated with an auto dealership as a heartless and greedy thief offends me. I wonder how many hours you have spent on a showroom floor trying to earn a living as I have for many years.

In all my time in this business I have never had to worry about meeting a customer away from the dealership and being embarrassed to do so. We are not all what this lame web site portrays us to be.

I will be watching this car dealer horror story series to see if you have the decency to print this comment."

MY RESPONSE...
I appreciate your input Rich. Just so you know....there are numerous references on my site about how not all car dealers are out to rip you off. You, it sounds like, are one of the good guys. As far as making a profit goes....I am a firm believer in the system of free enterprise. I'm a capitalist, but I don't believe in taking advantage of people to make my money and it sounds like you don't either. Great! My site wasn't written about guys like you, its just that I can't keep repeating myself over and over again all over my site about the good ones, besides, what would be the point in writing about the honest sales people because they aren't the ones to watch out for. Its like anything in life...when there is a preponderance of sleazebags in a field then it gives a bad name to the good ones.
As far as my info being "out dated"...I think that with the "good" salespeople that send me emails about how this stuff doesn't go on...well...I really think that perhaps they are either rookies and not aware yet of the stunts pulled by their co-workers, or they are fortuneate enough to have always worked at dealerships that don't screw their customers...and yes, at the risk of being redundant...they do exist!

:: Car dealer horror story by a car sales person, Steve, Minnesota, United States...
"I have the best car dealer horror story. It's the customer, who goes online and researches what he or she should pay for the car. They come into the dealership and offer thousands less and then accuse the dealer of playing games. Who is the bad guy here? The dealer or the consumer? One of many websites that are only interested in promoting what they believe to be the evil car salesman. What about the evil consumer? Present both sides of the story!!!!"

MY RESPONSE...
My role on this site is to warn people about the dishonest car sales people and not the honest ones.

:: Car dealer horror story by a car salesperson, Ken Wisconsin, United States...
"I am a happy car salesman. I don't make a ton of money selling cars ($35,000-$40,000 for selling $5,000,000 of inventory), but I do love cars in general and I like talking to people. Contrary to what you all may believe, not all sales people are scum. Although there are admittedly some in my field who do take advantage of others for profit, you shouldn't assume every person is going to.

My best advice for new car shopping is RESEARCH. Ask to see our invoices. You can find out what we pay for vehicles if you do a little research. Yes there is hold back and bonus money beyond that for volume. But it is ,after all, a business. If you come informed of costs and try to dip into the holdback, you can be assured you are close to a good deal. Most new car salesman don't make their money off of the sticker price anymore. Our manufacturers pay us to keep our customers happy and loyal, so customer service is a top priority.

If you buy used, definitely be prepared to buy an extended warranty. You just don't know how the vehicle has been taken care of or driven.

So be informed. It is your best tool against getting scammed and having a car dealer horror story for yourself. And, coming from a car salesman, NEVER trade in your car unless you are willing to accept the fact that you are throwing away thousands of dollars.

Be wary, but not afraid. We are people too, just trying to make a living. Be prepared, research, and read the articles on this site often - they may just save you money!!"
MY RESPONSE TO THE PREVIOUS CAR DEALER HORROR STORY... Thanks Ken! That was awesome unsolicited advice for the consumer. I have nothing more to add that "car dealer horror story!"

MY RESPONSE TO THIS CAR DEALER HORROR STORY...
I modified his email address so don't bother emailing him. I mean, whats the point anyway? I didn't bother editing his email though...obviously!! Look, he has a point. The point is that you really are on your own. His email drives home what I'm talking about throughout this website....and that is the importance of educating yourself BEFORE you go to the dealer! Enough said.
